Short bio

I got a degree in Natural Sciences and then a PhD in Animal Biology from the University of Rome "La Sapienza". I began studying primate behavior in 2000. During my PhD, I conducted field research at the National Park of Brasilia, Brazil, and I was a visiting student at the University of Brasilia. Then, I was a post-doctoral research fellow at CNR and I have been also a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany. I am currently working at CNR, Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies, Rome. I have authored more than 30 publications in scientific journals and books and participated in several research and didactic projects. I regularly supervise students for their Master or PhD thesis.

Research interests

I have a broad interest in animal behavior and cognition, with a special attention on primates. My research investigates a variety of topics such as feeding behavior, human-animal interactions, behavioral flexibility, causal and analogical reasoning, tool use and action planning in primates.

Qualche curiosità

Come hai iniziato a studiare le scimmie?

Ero alla ricerca di una tesi in etologia e mi si è presentata la possibilità di studiare i cebi in cattività. Non mi sono fatta sfuggire l'occasione!

Il momento più bello e quello più imbarazzante della tua carriera.

Il momento più bello è stato la prima volta che ho osservato i cebi in natura. Un'esplosione di vitalità e armonia, non riuscivo a staccargli gli occhi di dosso! Il parlare ai convegni in un'altra lingua mi imbarazza sempre un po', non capisco mai se sono chiara e esaustiva nella mia esposizione.

Se non fossero scimmie sarebbero?

Non mi precludo nessuna possibilità, ci sono tante forme di intelligenza là fuori.

La scoperta che ti ha più sorpreso sulle scimmie.

Non ce n'è una in particolare, mi piacciono molto gli studi sulla comunicazione e quelli che ci aiutano a capire come le scimmie vedono gli altri.

Cosa ti annoia di più del mestiere di ricercatore.

Il lavoro d'ufficio, ma peggiore della noia è la paura di non trovare più fondi per le scimmie del Centro.
